EIC at UVic

On 23rd February 8 EIC students from ESO 3 and 4 attended the awards ceremony of the "Llegim Ciència” contest organised by the University of Vic. Two students, Gunnar Montseny and Jordi Salvadó were awarded with 3rd and 4th places in their respective categories.

The experience was very rewarding. Students from ESO 3 and 4 participated voluntarily in the V Prize "Llegim Ciència" of the UVic. The purpose of the contest is to link science to literature. This year this purpose was achieved through reading the book by Mª Carmen Roca "La Ciutat Oblidada”, based on  the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl, 30 years ago.

The ceremony, held at the Aula Magna of the university, was chaired by the Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology, Sra Laura Dempere- Marco;  Dr. Julita Olivares, organiser of the event and Head of the Science and Society Programme; Professor Vladimir Zaiats witness of the moment; and the author of the book, Mª Carme Roca.

The writer told us about the process of producing the book ... Vladimir Zaiats moved our feelings with first hand testimony because he was in the country at the time of the nuclear accident... the voices and images made a "whole" that has made us reflect and be more aware of the importance of what we do and how we can be involved and look after our planet and our future, beginning with individual actions and social conscience.

We must congratulate the participation of our students in ESO4, Anna Assens, Cristina Barés and Josep Mª Rocafort and from ESO3, Miguel Garrido, Anju Urakawa, Víctor Queralt, Martin Garrido and especially to the winners: Gunnar Montseny - 3rd prize in his category, Model A (personal opinion on energy) and Jordi Salvadó, 4th prize in his category, Model B (alternate ending) from among 700 participants and more than 130 papers presented.

CONGRATULATIONS!
